UPDATE: OK, now the Nats and Lee are talking

UPDATE: I’m just going to stop updating this Cliff Lee stuff, because it’s changing too fast: now it’s being reported that the Nationals and Lee are “maintaining a dialogue.” Still, Lee’s agent is saying that a deal is unlikely this week, so take it all for what it’s worth.

11:57 A.M.: Well, there goes our fun for the morning. Jon Heyman says that the Nats aren’t really in on Lee and that they’re looking at other pitchers instead. So if Heyman is right, earlier reports are no longer operative. That’s how the Winter Meetings roll, I guess.

To get us through the afternoon I think I’ll start a new rumor or two.  In the comments, please put the best ideas for rumors that are (a) obviously not true; but (b) still sorta kinda plausible if you squint.  I’ll consider tweeting the best ones as stone-cold-fact tonight during happy hour.

Cliff Lee is the new Derek Jeter…only minus the angry rhetoric.

The latest I am hearing is that the Red Sox will acquire Mike Scioscia to platoon with Jason Varitek. Epstein reportedly likes Scioscia’s intimate knowledge of John Lackey’s pitching habit and is a good target for Wakefield, as the knuckleball will just bounce right off him. Terms of the deal call for Scioscia to serve as co-captain.

Breaking News: An erroneous report on the Nationals attempts to acquire Cliff Lee earlier in the day was clarified, when it was discovered that the Nationals actually intend to bring the great Bill Lee back to the majors. The closest thing to a sage the world of baseball has ever seen, he will make his entrance from the bullpen to the tune of the Warren Zevon song written about, and named after, him.

The Giants send Barry Zito and $24MM ($8MM a year for the three remaining years on his contract) to the Nationals for Danny Espinosa.
