why am I pissed? no really. why? cause of crawford and Gonzalez? seriously? OK fine. you caught me. i really do wish that we had a replacement at first base. and i honestly wish that the Yanks got crawford cause you know…. they had the worst offense in the league last yr as well as the worst run differential. they were also VERY slow on the bases and didnt even make the the postseason. finished in 3rd as a matter of fact. ooooooor am i pissed that a half decent pitcher with 2 good yrs under his belt got a 4 yr extension while he was on the DL for half a season? OR MAYBE.. MAYBE.. cause we have the WORST closer and bullpen in the league. do me a favor pick one of those any one.. and change the word Yanks with the word Sox. kthxbye

like i said.. the Sox have a much better chance this yr than any of the past 3 but still they are in no way a lock for anything with just these two new signing. sadly the Yanks will sign Lee for 7 or 20 or 100 yrs whichever and when old timers day comes around in 7 yrs he will be pitching on regular rest.

The same team plus 3-4 wins through FA, AND, conservatively, 3-4 wins from better health. That puts them at 95-97 wins. I’m pretty happy with that. And they’re set up going forward from next year, with a core of Lester, Buchholz, Gonzalez, Crawford, Youkilis, and Pedroia.

Pretty sure that pitching-wise one of the Beckett-Lackey-Matsuzaka Triumvirate of Disappointment bounces back (though don’t ask me to pick which!), giving them an excellent front 3. Not much to do with that expensive back three aside from wait for some bounceback. Pavano would be kind of pointless in a rotation that’s already pushing Wakefield to the ‘pen.

hey listen.. i hate the sox more than i hate Hitler and Bin Laden combined. and i will not say that this was a bad signing for them. Crawford will be 36 at the end of his contract and im sure still stealing 40-50 bases a yr and putting up the same numbers for the most part. but this signing along with Gonzalez does not leapfrog them over anyone. they still need pitching.. badly. they should make a play for Pavano or something like that. then they MAY be a force to be reckoned with. until them they are the same team as last year with 3 or 4 more wins.

Yes, true, he’s 29 right now. My bad. But he’ll still be 35 in his last year. Just as he was 28 in 2010. Baseball considers it your Age 28 season if you turn 29 any time after June 30th. He’ll be 35 for most of the last year.

Stick to Fishing buddy cause Baseball is def not your thing. Lackey had 14 wins and like a 5 ERA. every time he took the mound you were sure it was a loss. yea AJ was shit this yr but he was amazing the yr before so for right now its a wash. (plus he helped us get a ring). Hughes got hit hard in the post season 2 out of three of he starts. his first start was like 7 inn no runs soooooo? howd Backett and Dice-K and Pap and Lester and Clay do in the post season this yr? yeaaaaaaaaaaaa. you talk abotu old? The Rays have a history of cultivating talent through the farm system. After last season, Longo has nowhere to go but up. He can only improve at the plate this year. The core is still there in the starting pitching, and their pitching is the only thing that held them together last season. Yes, they have lost some big names, but they ARE the defending AL east champs. Let’s give them a chance.

Really? This RS owner FINIALY breaks down and signs a decent FA and all the sudden the RS have the Yankees on the run? Perhaps it’s you that doesn’t know much about baseball.

Unless all the wild speculation regarding Gonzalez increase to 50 HRs is correct, and it ain’t, offensively Gonzalez/Crawford is not better than Beltre/Martinez. Check last year’s numbers, it’s practically a complete wash.

Crawford is a good pick up but all the RS did was stay current. Had they not signed either Crawford or Werth then they likely would fighting the Os all season for third place.

Of course the down side is that the Nation can pretty much bag all that BS about Yankee payroll and buying success since their two acquisitions this off season will add up to over 300 million in contracts.

I recall someone posting in the past couple of days and I’m para phasing “the next time this ownership a player to a $100M contract it will be the first time”. Well it would seem now in the space of 4 days the Red Sox have signed 2 players to contract well in excess of $100M dollars. Crawford who will be 37 years old when his $142M contract expires. Adrian Gonzalez who will also be 37 years old when his $160M +/- Eight year contract expires. The $160M for Gonzalez includes his 2011 option of $6.2M that SD picked up prior to trading him. Considering many posters were questioning the wisdom of giving players long term contracts. One has to wonder about the length of these two contracts, not the per year dollars but the length.

I am impressed. It looks either Ellsbury or Cameron is the odd man out. If it’s Camerson the Red Sox have three options for trade him and eat part of his close to $8M salary, let him warm the bench in which case they have close to $8M warming the bench or they can always make like it’s a softball game and play him in short centerfield. The Red Sox still have 2 glaring problems. First the bullpen, it was horrendous last year and that includes their closer Papelbon (8 BS, .390 ERA). Secondly, they still don’t have a major league catcher Salty & Varitek are the weak link in the position players.
Also for all the talk about the Sox starting pitching the only 2 pitchers the Sox can count on it appears at least from last season are Lester and Buchholz. Beckett and Dice K are walking advertisements for the DL virtually year in and year out. As for Lackey with the exception of one good year it looks like about 14 wins per season is about average for him. Maybe that might change with the Sox new signings and offense but for the last 3 years Lackey’s ERA has approached 4.00 or as in the case of last year was 4.40 his WHIP and BAA were also high. Those numbers won’t be much effected by anything the Sox have done this winter. As they say let the games begin.
