Abraham – who got the Crawford scoop, most likely from the club – helps the Sox smooth things over with Papelbon, a guy who can be kind of a head case and whom they need to stay focused and perform. It’s kind of a stupid story, and the only purpose it could really serve is to allow the Sox to say to Paps that they love him and were never looking to replace him.

Jeter didn’t want to test the market; he wanted the Yankees to pay crazily over market value for him just because. He wound up taking an above-market contract and then grousing about it at the press conference.

Rivera looked around for what he could find, decided he wanted to be a Yankee, took what may have been an under market value contract, and hasn’t said boo.

None of that makes much of an on-field difference, and it’s hardly a big moral issue either, but it’s fun for the fans to find out that certain players care for the team in a way a bit like the way the fans care for it.
