Yea, not to bag on these guys too badly but there was good reason Accardo was demoted to the AAA. He had really become ineffective as an MLB pitcher. Having seen him often before he was sent down, I came to equate him with multiple singles up the middle. The guy just gave up so much and he could not stop the other team's hitting. And for sure, Gregg puts way too many guys on base. Here is what O's fans have to look forward to next year. Say your team gets a three or four run lead so you bring Accardo in relief for the 7th and 8th. Accardo gives up two runs. Now it is the ninth and your lead is narrowed to one to two runs and Gregg comes out to close. First out is a long fly out - whew, close one. Then he walks a guy - eek, winning or tying run at the plate. Ground out and runner advances to second with now two outs - gaack, ulcers. If your lucky, Gregg gets the third out. If not, game over or extra innings - dang it. If you like that kind of excitement, Gregg is your ideal closer.

Nervous 9th innings, no kidding. It seemed like there would always be multiple base runners, and oh yeah don't get me started on the # of walks. Amazing that the blown saves only numbered 6 for the year, cause it sure felt like it was more.

Don't make it a horsemeat and velveeta sandwich, what ever you do.

Gregg was the Feesh's late-inning batting practice pitcher before he afflicted the Cubbies and Feather Lice. He pitches hurt, too - which makes him ineffective in a uniquely heroic way. When Gregg lopes in from the boolpen, carrying his five gallon can of gasoline, it's bad for your team, but great for the orbital muscles of your eyes and the muscles that hold your throat and chin together. I wouldn't want to be the woman he comes home to on a bad night, since he has so many of them, but I wouldn't mind being his optometrist.

The Baltimore Sun has said that the $12 million number is wrong. They do say that an offer for $8 to $10 million is on the table. Baltimore has signed Jerremy Accardo who had fallen out of favor in Toronto. Accardo pitched in Triple A most of last season.

As a O's fan, this is alot to pay for a set up/closer. But when you have the track record as the Orioles do you have to over pay in order to get the guy you want/need. They will be improved this year and hopefully playing .500 ball. They need to do something to be a little more attractive for free agents. If you think about it, other than Izturis ( former Oriole ) this will be there big free agent signing. I know they are looking at 1st baseman Adam Laroche which will be an upgrade as well.

All I want for Christmas is a power bat : D

Sorry to disagree Panda, but we Jays fans were happy to see him depart. There were far too many blown saves and nervous 9th innings for our liking. Take a look at his WHIP. He allowed too many base runners. He was quite scary in back to back situations. In the second half, Gaston was very reluctant to use him in back to back games. On a positive note, the Jays will get a sandwich pick due to his departure.

Oh c'mon guys. Give my O's a break for once. $12M sounds tall I agree, but Gregg is a good pitcher.

Comparing this to the Gonzalez deal seems fair on the surface, but Gonzo's injury cost him half a season. He was very effective when healthy.

My team has holes they're still filling and I'd rather fill them $12M at a time instead of $126M on one guy like Werth. For teams that don't print their own money it's a smarter approach.

Now having said all that, he hasn't signed anything yet so this might not happen.

The Orioles actually will be much improved as evidenced by their 2nd half record but the signing of Gregg at $12 mil is terrible. Spend the money elsewhere.

Definitely. So if they have 10 save opportunities all season, they can count on Gregg to blow about 2 of them. Sounds like money well spent.

Gregg is gonna close in Baltimore??? I guess he won't be too busy for the next two years. That's a whole bunch of loot to spend on a closer when you can't win too often isn't it?
