I agree. The Gants will compete but not contend – certainly not in a division with the Feelies rotation waiting to go through them like a hot buzzsaw through warm butter for 18 games this coming season. I see the Mutts in last place this year, but that’s a special basement niche carved out for “rebuilding programs,” kinda like the saucer-shaped mass of decaying vegetation mother gators construct for laying their eggs. So far, with so many unproven rookies in their lineup and with two of their three biggest run producers gone, I suspect that even with the Frankenstein boolpen Larry beinfest has cobbled together this offseason, the Feesh may be spread out on top of them, with the Gnats, Braves and Feelies rising in succession upon that unfortunate foundation.

I don’t see that being any improvement over Dunn, Zimmerman, and Willingham, certainly more expensive for the Nats…

I like Derrek Lee much more than LaRoche as I think he has more upside. I don’t think Lee is quite done yet and could bounce back for a decent year or two. Say what you will about the Nats, but think they won’t wind up last in East this year. A .500 season isn’t out of the question.

This is the kind of move the Nationals should be making: (presumably) lower cost, higher upside in hopes of contention this year, but not tying themselves into a long-term contract. Lee’s probably got the highest ceiling of the “older disappointing free agent first basemen” left.

When the Cubs were going to deal him to Anaheim, Derrek stated that he didn’t go there because, basically, he didn’t think they had enough of a chance for October.

How would he feel about the Nationals, then? Is his attitude the same, or does the boy just want to play?

Though I must admit, a Werth-Zimmerman-Lee 3-4-5 could stand up against almost all NL teams.
