Well like you said if you read between the lines it seems more likely that it was bc of Reyes and not the Cliff Lee signing that made the Phillies pull there offer.

People have been speculating that it was Reyes weight and health that made the deal fall through, because of that if it wasnt true Reyes representatives would have denied that right away bc it would hurt his chances of signing with a new team. The fact that they didnt come out and deny itmakes you believe that theres some truth to it .

If it was because of the Cliff Lee signing Reyes people would have just said it. No one would have thought less of him bc of it and it wouldnt have hurt his value. While on the other hand lettng the rumors go would have certainly hurt his value.

So the fact that there not saying anything pretty much confirms all the speculation that it was his health that caused the deal to fall through. Either that or his agent, publicists etc. are idiots and dont realise if it was just the Cliff Lee thing that keeping there mouth shut is hurting there client .
