The Brewers sign Craig Counsell to a one-year deal

Craig Counsell, Ronny Cedeno

Ken Rosenthal reports that the Brewers have signed Craig Counsell.  That’s the sort of thing a team does when they realize that Yuniesky Betancourt is at the top of your depth chart at shortstop.

OK, not totally fair: the Brewers have been thinking about keeping Counsell in the fold for some time now.  He’s 40, but with Alcides Escobar gone, he may see more time than he saw as a utility player last year.

And if Roenicke has half a brain, Counsell will start over Yuni. Just look at that over .300 OBP! I’m not optimistic though.

Assuming no one like, say, Nick Punto is signed before the season starts, my guess is Counsell gets as many starts as his body will allow. Not sure that gets over 100, though. I am not excited about Yuni as even a back-up shortstop, though…
