Phillies may wait to trade Joe Blanton until Carl Pavano signs

Dec 22, 2010, 11:19 AM EDT

Joe Blanton being on the trade block following Philadelphia’s signing of Cliff Lee is no surprise, but Ken Rosenthal of speculates that the Phillies may wait to trade Blanton until after free agent Carl Pavano signs.

Rosenthal notes that Blanton and Pavano have had similar results and reports that the Nationals are among at least one team bidding for Pavano that would be interested in trading for Blanton if the free agent signs elsewhere.

According to Rosenthal the Phillies “will not demand much in return for Blanton” because “their goal is to clear as much of his salary as possible.” He’s owed $8.5 million in both 2011 and 2012, while Pavano is said to be seeking a two- or three-year deal for around $10 million per season.

Toss in the fact that Pavano is five years older than Blanton and teams would be smart to talk to the Phillies sooner than later.

They better get another fat Joe in there if they trade him. I’ll cry if they lose the ability to name the staff “Fat Joe and the Terror Squad.”

I hate to see him go. The dude is a good pick up. And he’s huge. Anyone who gets him will be happy with him imo.

      • Mr. Jason "El Bravo" Heyward - Dec 22, 2010 at 11:43 AM

He is a ‘huge’ ‘pick up’ indeed.

I knew it would be you. Or that dastardly Utley’s merkin.

Jonny, I’m hurt and offended that you would think I would resort to making cheap jokes about Blanton’s girth. —sniff—

That said, the Phightins are just looking for Joe’s new Old Country Buffet.

    • Utley's Hair - Dec 22, 2010 at 11:44 AM

You’ll get your just deserts, Heyward.

    • Panda Claus - Dec 22, 2010 at 11:58 AM

If you’re looking for a pound-for-pound replacement, perhaps the Phils should go after Garcia. Then you could have Fat Freddy Dough and the Terror Squad.

Really? I thought Blanton was older than that. Hmm. Learn something new every day.
INFORMAL POLL QUESTION: Who weighs more, Bobby Jenks or Joe Blanton?
(And the answer is not “They both should have moons orbiting them.”)

    • CJ - Dec 22, 2010 at 12:34 PM

They should both have entire solar systems orbiting them.

Aaaah, maybe we’ll take ’em both.

    • yankeesfanlen - Dec 22, 2010 at 11:52 AM

Come to think of it, no. We already have one FAT TOAD.

      • pisano - Dec 22, 2010 at 12:16 PM

“We already have one Fat Toad” and if I get my Christmas wish he’ll be gone soon.

Must be Sanchez then. He’s the heaviest guy outside of CC. Never heard him called that.

      • Utley's Hair - Dec 22, 2010 at 1:30 PM

The heaviest guy outside of CC? Is Sabathia eating people now?

Speaking of nicknames and Rotunda, if Pittsburgh were to sign Brad Penny, their starting staff could be called 4 Bucs and a Penny. $4.01. Or is that overpaying?
