Russell Martin will be in the best shape of his life

Russell Martin mask

Not even Christmas yet and we’ve had a bunch of these already:

A two-time All-Star and former Gold Glove winner, Martin slipped offensively the last two seasons. He feels a new workout regimen will greatly benefit his hitting.

“I’m probably going to be in the best shape of my life going into spring training,” said Martin, who also could spell Alex Rodriguez some at third base this season.

I just wonder if this means the usually fertile January BSOML period will be fallow this year or if the early rush is a harbinger of a bumper crop.

(thanks to reader ppirrello for the heads up)

I have a feeling Martin will regain his stroke with the Yankees especially if the rest of that line-up hits like it should. They will be hard to pitch to if all is what it should be. The problem I saw last year was too many strikeouts especially from the lead off spot. It seemed if Jeter wasn’t striking out he was hitting into double plays. I think he should be at the bottom of the order if his ego can handle it. As a team they seemed to strike out a lot, but in their defense they have a lot of guys that hit for power which tends to lead to strike outs.
