Watching Bill Lee shoot free throws is more fun than you’d expect

Dec 24, 2010, 9:00 AM EDT

Bill Lee

There’s more win in this video of Bill “Spaceman” Lee shooting ten free throws and talking b.s. about basketball and the baseball bats he makes than there is any right to be.

And the “ten from the line” theme song is second only to the theme to Jonah Keri’s podcast in terms of pure awesomeness.  Enjoy:

(thanks to Jim Furtado for the heads up)

Bill Lee may be my favorite baseball personality of all time…even though he probably lost the Red Sox the pennant in 1978 with his Bernie Crarbo protest strike. I often wonder if Spaceman knew Carbo was habitually drunk or stoned during games, as Carbo admitted last year. I think he probably did.

This is the guy who ran for congress on an energy platform: he claimed we could save billions of dollars a year in energy costs simply by passing legislation to lower the boiling point of water by two degrees. Imagine how much better off we’d all be with a congress full of Bill Lees than with the crop of freshly minted knuckledragging idiots who are going to show up in January.

Perfect Gator, I’ve always said this guy was living proof that you don’t come back from LSD.

I did. But then, I never had to go all that far away in the first place.

Say what you will, but chances are it’ll be a long time before anyone older than Bill Lee wins a professional baseball game, a record his set this past summer.

    • JBerardi - Dec 24, 2010 at 11:45 AM

…A record he’ll likely break next summer.

Is there a Baseball Hall of Awesome we can induct the Spaceman into?

    • JBerardi - Dec 24, 2010 at 11:46 AM

It’s guys like Bill Lee that make me think that the proverbial “Hall of Very Good” would be a viable institution in real life…

The way he’s squinting in the Montreal hat he almost looks like Clint Eastwood in “Unforgiven”.
