Octavio Dotel is close to reaching agreement on a one-year contract with the Toronto Blue Jays, according to Enrique Rojas of ESPNdeportes.com.

Rojas reports that the deal would be similar to last year’s contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates, in which Dotel received $3.2 million plus another potential $500,000 in incentives.

Dotel was 3-4 with a 4.08 ERA and 22 saves last season for the Pirates, Dodgers and Rockies. He struck out 75 and walked 32 in 64 innings. He would get a chance to be the closer in Toronto, since Kevin Gregg is a free agent seeking big dollars elsewhere.

When I saw this speculation last night, I was a bit surprised given his age. He will have to win the closer’s job in spring training as it will not be handed to him. A 1 year contract is appropriate.

This guy was passed to 3 different teams for trade bate. Posted a 4 ERA and struck out 75 batters in 60 something innings. He is going to get the same contract as last year??? For what??? Your going to tell me that he is worth 3.5 million dollars? No way!!!

Maybe I can relax a little more in the old easy chair during the 9th inning this year. Last year with Gregg added more drama and suspense than you find in your average Hollywood movie.
