The Reds have talked to Edgar Renteria

Renteria running

Reds GM Walt Jocketty said yesterday that he has spoken to Edgar Renteria‘s agent.

Gosh, I hope he wasn’t insulting!

Jocketty is familiar with Renteria, of course, as he was the guy who signed him to play for the Cardinals.  Based on his previous comments, however, it seems kind of doubtful that Renteria would come to Cincinnati to be Paul Janish‘s backup.  But I guess crazier things have happened. Things like Renteria being insulted at a million dollar offer.

Jocketty keeps thinking inside the box. Remembering what was, instead of what could be in the near future. The braintrust of the Reds should be backing up Janish with their best minor league shortstop, not wasting money on over the hill shortstops like Renteria. Yes, Renteria did some really good things in the Giants postseason run, but he’s not worth millions anymore. Get real Walt!

I’m pretty sure Jocketty’s plan of using the 04 Cardinals to get to the playoffs isn’t going to work as well this year as it did last year.
