Can we lay off the who is to blame here. This is a nice story about the tragedy of a nine-year-old girl getting senselessley murdered by some nutjob. Sure he may have been pushed by vitriol from the right but please save that for another site. I am proudly a liberal and think it's crazy America has such a fascination with guns and large ammo clips. That is not me. We need to look in the mirror as some sensible people have remarked. Instead we have political groups sparring over this and that. I have had my fill of the Tea Party nitwits screaming at healthcare town hall meetings and carrying their senseless signs depicting Pres. Obama as some African tribesman. We're better than that. Where is the sensible dialogue between groups instead of screaming idiots all the time. I have never in my 50+ years seen people act like this. Sure people are frustrated with things, but the world ain't perfect as they say. We don't need to fight battles on this site where someone is doing something for a beautiful, young girl.

Well, no, I've always known how "conservative" I am. And i've always said that both parties have their good and bad points. Most bad though in all honesty. You seem to dredge up things about firearms I agree with. People don't need sub machine guns. Although I've been offered them for sale, which I refused against my own inclination that it would be better off locked up in my gun safe then on the streets (yeah, crazy I know). People don't need huge clips of ammo either. Which many states such as my own limits. I'm not arguing these points, because they're right. As far as the question "Why do people need more than one?" Well this is still a free country I hope, and they want more than one. I collect antique firearms, some over 100 years old that work great, you're implying I should not have that right. Well who the heck are you to legislate my life and my hobbies? Also do you realize there are many different configurations of rifles and shotguns specific to different types of Hunting? I guess not with that comment. Side arms are needed in addition for bear and big game hunting because the game can kill you. In addition to personal protection. Now just to refresh. I don't care what your beliefs on guns are. I don't discriminate against anyone over such beliefs. You can be as pink as the owens panther or as blue as the sky, and i don't hold it against anyone. Everyone thinks and feels differently and that's cool with me. I even learned to like Yankee and Mets fans, go figure.. And about the Deck. although funny funny and all, I really do have a new deck and it's pretty damn big. And besides that I'm just an average guy... LOL, ok maybe just above average. Or at least I'd like to think that anyway.

Ya big pinky you... I'm not even trying to tell you you're wrong. Just that beliefs are divisive, and because some don't jive with yours doesn't make them wrong. Just different.

Oh, crap. Here I go again with the politicizing this tragedy here, but only once more.

I beginning to think that we are apparently mirror images of one another---which, unfortunately for you (and your slave driver wife, though she had a choice in the matter), means that you are pretty damn ugly. By the way, I live in the suburbs (just about, depending on your definition of where suburbia begins and whether Jesus actually hails from there, but not really), not in the city. I can't foresee any situation in which I would bring a gun into my house.

And I disagree with you---go figure---on your assertion that borders on nature vs. nurture about being raised around guns and not. You also qualify your position with being raised "knowing how to handle and respect firearms." The safeguards in place do not have any way of rooting out the ones who were NOT, in fact, raised "knowing how to handle and respect firearms." Besides, you mean to tell me that the anti-government militias don't raise their kids that way? The nutjob fringe groups don't raise their kids that way? You think they want to be offed accidentally by one of their own jagoffs?

And as I said above, automatic and assault rifles and these high capacity clips and magazines that this freak used have absolutely no place in a civilized society. They are made for just one thing---killing people in multiples, because why would you use that for hunting? When was the last time a herd of whatever stampeded toward someone to the point that this person needed to unload tens of rounds at a time? And why does someone need more than one gun? Or even more than two for that matter? The "well regulated militia" phrase in the 2nd Amendment is quite often glossed over---if not omitted altogether---in pro-gun rhetoric and speechifying. Jonny, I become exasperated when people take this issue lightly enough that they don't cite the entire clause and justify it.

As for you, my opinion may have shifted slightly, but not a lot. I am no longer envious of your deck, since you seem to be compensating for something in other areas. I do think you need to reexamine your opinion of your philosophical standing, though. It seems you are more conservative than you thought.

Well UT, that's fine by me. I'm not trying to change your mind as much as I'm just trying to add a different perspective to the issue here. I think one way, you another, and that's great. I just don't like more laws being forced upon law abiding citizens because it's another persons opinion that guns are the problem, when it's just been people all along. I'd say by my pool of friends and family, we're just about split down the middle on this issue. And the interesting part is, it seems people raised knowing how to handle and respect firearms think one way, and the people not exposed to them besides through media outlets on the nightly news think another way. I'll tell you what though, since you do live in the city where it's loaded with those who will stick a gun in your face for a buck, I strongly recommend that you learn about guns, pick out one that suits you, and protect yourself and your family with it. Then pray to Cake you never have to use it for that. And you won't be a bad man for doing so. I hope my opinion on the matter hasn't soiled your impression of me. I sure as heck haven't changed my opinion of you over any of this. I enjoy a little healthy discussion. Now let's get back to the only subject we can all agree on. When does baseball season begin again??

Come on, Jonny. Where did those numbers come from? Any numbers I've ever heard/seen regarding shootings hover around 30k, not 10. And does that 45k include accidents (read collisions, etc.)?

As for the gun vs. stabbing, etc., what are those numbers? A gun lets a person kill from a distance, making it impersonal. With the others, the perp needs to be up close, which makes it personal.

This whole thing about the guns is doing exactly what I had no intention of doing, which is to---for want of a better term---politicize it. Ergo, I'm going to stop.
It is endearing of you I must admit. That you think people who want to kill will actually follow the rule of law. Laws only effect law abiding citizens. The fact that this guy did do it lawfully is the exception. I wish it could be taken back as much as you, but he would have found one, somewhere, if his lawful attempts failed. Dude you live in Philly. I can get an illegal gun in a half hour for 50 bucks in the city. You should know that.

Lets see 45,000 anually for autos compared to 10,000 by gun. And the percentage of children is much much higher for autos.

And of course if we didn't have guns we can always stab, or run people over with your car, or strangle them, or hit them with a log like the cavemen did before weapons existed.

It's doesn't take an ego to know you're right, it just takes knowing things. The fact is the whole "gun hate" thing is misplaced since people who want to kill, will kill, even if they have no gun. And as long as we exist guns will exist since any good machinist can make them. laws created to stop it will only effect good people like us who actually obey the laws. I find comfort in knowing I can protect myself and my family against these crimminals by having my own. My family won't be victimized like Dr. William Petit's family was. His wife and children Raped and murdered then burned alive. And the perps, had no gun.
I choose to protect myself and loved ones, unlike this man who relied on the police. Which I'm sure he now wishes he had been a gun owner at the time.

And I'm not saying anything about taking away anybody's---with obvious exceptions---guns. I'm saying the laws already on the books need to be enforced and supplemented with stricter ones. Why does anyone need more than one? Or even two? And why does anyone need assault rifle and/or other semi- and full- automatic guns? There is absolutely no reason for them, except, sadly, for the military.

But I do find it fascinating how the 2nd Amendment is constantly being thrown around with folks claiming the right to bear arms. Yes, the 2nd Amendment does guarantee the right to bear arms. However, the phrase that is almost always left out is the "well regulated militia."

If he couldn't get a gun, he'd have driven his car into the crowd and had the same, or more devastating effect. Sure a gun makes more of a statement but it's not the only way for a nutjob like this to make his statement now is it? Should we outlaw cars or the gasoline that drives them since like a bazillion more cases of vehicular manslaughter exist?

A lot of you guys have some good points. Especially those mentioning how the both sides of the political fence are using such a horrid act as fuel to tarnish the other. Its amazing how disgusting some politicians and analysts really are but what can you expect right? Look you think an act like this is going to make me vote against guns? hell no, its my right to bear arms and if you think a law put in place to remove those weapons, or remove my protection your out of your mind. This act was done by someone who is ill, someone who's moral thinking is way out of wack. Sadly you're seeing that a lot these days because of the tough times this country is enduring. Its sad to see so many people break under the pressure, but it shows sometimes the weak minded people we have become.

I pray that Rep Giffords and the rest of the victims make a full recovery soon.
