This can't be that hard can it? Pujols has the Cardinals over the barrel. If they want to keep him, put the onus on Albert. He says he wants to be on a winner and that he wants to stay in StL, if that is true, then he'll want a fair, but not astronomical salary.
.
All the Cardinals have to do is show him the books and budget, and ask him to name his salary, so that he knows how his choice will affect the team's ability to keep Wainwright, Carpenter, Rasmus, or anyone else. Let him choose how competitive his team will be. The Cardinals don't really have a choice in the matter, do they? Why not just admit as much and the the deal done?
.
If they lose Albert, the franchise is done for a while. They can't compete on the FA market and the Farm system is nearly barren.

dude you're nuts... MANY teams will find ways to get enough money to spend on this guy.. it's more about the money he would bring in from fans buying tickets, jerseys, etc. than what his play on the field would be.. you would see whatever team probably easily sell 10k season tickets that day of the signing...

More or less. The Yankees and Red Sox figure to be out of the running and unless the Angels want to move Kendry Morales to the outfield or something, they're likely out of it as well.

That takes out three of the usual big spenders. His market figures to be pretty limited in terms of teams that can afford him and/or have a hole at 1B.
