Jon Rauch signs with the Blue Jays

Jan 17, 2011, 3:58 PM EDT

MLB: Rangers vs Twins AUG 30

Toronto has signed reliever Jon Rauch to a one-year, $3.5 million contract with a $3.75 million option for 2012.

Rauch had a decent year last year, pressed into service as the Twins’ closer when Joe Nathan had Tommy John surgery. He had a 3.12 ERA and 46 strikeouts and 14 walks in 57.2 innings and converted 21 of 25 saves. ┬áHe also led the league in being really, really tall and in having neck tattoos, so he’s not a one-dimensional player.

Octavio Dotel will likely start as the closer, but given how erratic he can be, the Jays may happily turn to Rauch if need be.

Does Carl Crawford get no neck tattoo love?

The Jays now have 3 lefties in the pen. At this stage we do not know who the closer will be, and frankly, I am not concerned. Last season, the Jays did not decide on their closer until halfway through the first month of the season. There are several decent candidates and someone will emerge. Rauch’s era last season was better than that of anyone who closed for the Jays. (I have forgotten his name already, as he was mediocre).

Rauch is as right handed as Kevin Gregg.

The Jay’s are starting to load up on former Expo relievers. First they sign Chad Cordero, and now Jon Rauch. It is now time for Jeff Reardon to get in the best shape of his life, for a comeback.
