I’ve been one of the most vocal critics of Cashman on this site, but I see nothing wrong with this signing (provided Colon signs for cheap). At worst, he explodes in the minors and no damage done. At best, he eats up innings as a fifth starter, and if he has anything left, he’s still better than Mitre. Cashman gets a lot of deserved heat, but I don’t think it’s fair in this instance.

Yeah, but CC can actually PITCH at 280 lbs (or whatever he is). David Wells could to the tune of about what, 220 wins? Sid Fernandez. Heck, Tom Seaver was a pretty fat dude from 1975 on.
Bartolo Colon? Not so much.

I would say that Cashman may be trying to make waves, but I doubt that he's trying to get himself run out of town on a rail. If only because getting fired hurts his ability to market himself. He could resign fand everyone would understand; The Boss-v2 is impossible to work under and he wants more autonomy. But if he were to get fired, doesn't that make him look worse? If anything this proves that Cashman doesn't have a good handle on PR, as fan sentiment will impact revenue via ticket sales, hats, shirts etc.

There’s just no way he’s trying to get out of the job. Crazy talk is what that is. I have to believe there are plenty of reasons unknown to us as to why Cashman signed Colon to a minor league deal.

So Cashman is supposed to juggle the schedule of his front office because the NY Post and callers to WFAN may go nuts? They’re gonna go nuts anyway so keep about your business I say, to do otherwise would be cowardly. The Yankees take flyers on pitchers trying to come back from injuries all the time (see: Prior, Mark) and anyone with half a brain who covers the team knows this.

According to the rankings yesterday the Yankees are one notch below the Cubs in starting pitching. Being ranked lower than the Cubs in any aspect of the game is cause for panic. I’m just guessing that the Yankee fans aren’t feeling all warm and fuzzy with Colon as their go to guy when one of their starters go down. I have two words for the Yankees: Braden Looper. He’s way more money and probably not as good, fitting the Yankee profile to a tee. As bonus he hasn’t pitched in a year.
