The vast majority of the outrage is from the SJ Mercury News, especially Mark Purdy. They have a massive inferiority complex with regards to SF, most clearly expressed back when SJ passed SF in population. Everyone there was completely baffled by the nation's lack of recognizing SJ as the big dog in the market. Most of them have transferred this obsession to getting the A's to SJ as solely a means of becoming a "Major League" city.

Giants are the more popular team all over the region, and that has always been true, although when the Giants stink and the A's are very good the split can seem much closer. About 20 years ago, when the Giants were moving to Florida and the A's were at their Bash Brothers peak, there was a poll done that showed the Giants as the number one team everywhere in Northern California except the two East Bay counties. The South Bay wasn't close at all, though you obviously do find a good number of A's fans around Milpitas. I don't think the fundamentals of the market have changed much over the years. There's a reason why Giants TV ratings are always stronger, often by a lot. And why the Giants broadcasts are premium radio programming, while the A's have bounced around various low watt stations for most of their history.

And who thinks that if the A's won the 2011 World Series it would provoke anything close to the near religious fervor that Northern Calif. went into over the Giants this past fall? The A's have four world titles, and not one of them generated a fraction of this level of public excitement.

I'm not trying to bash A's fans. But the reality is the franchise is a very distant second, even if they do well on the field. And that's as true in Santa Clara County as it is everywhere else.

Wow-other SF people on the site. And I thought it was me and Scatterbrian all by our lonesomes. Glad for the company.

Interesting thought that the "vast majority of South Bay residents have always been Giants fans." That's certainly true here in San Mateo County. I'd always thought San Jose and Santa Clara County were more evenly split between the Giants and the A's. The sense I have is that the stadium in San Jose would be contested over the usual objections (cost, traffic congestion, etc) but that the attendance even beyond 2 years would exceed what the A's have in Oakland. I don't follow the stadium plan as closely as some do:

Exactly. I'm fine with the A's to San Jose thing, but it's important to keep in mind that this is mainly a Mercury News/Chamber of Commerce cause, not something from the grass roots. I've lived in the DC area, where most people felt really angry and deprived of baseball for years despite the fact that MLB kept trying to pretend that Washington was part of the Greater Baltimore Area and filled with Orioles fans. That was bizarre and ridiculous.

But the vast majority of South Bay residents have always been Giants fans -- as is the case pretty much everywhere in Northern California, outside Alameda and Contra Costa counties (where's the A's have an edge, but even there only a narrow one). That's not likely to change any time soon, even if the A's can figure out how to build a stadium in San Jose. Which means the San Jose A's could find themselves in the unique position of being second fiddle in a home town they have all to themselves.

Here's the problem with the A's moving to San Jose: it's not going to suddenly make the A's THAT much more popular. All of the people (like myself) who grew up on the peninsula and in the South Bay as Giants fans aren't going to suddenly abandon the Giants just because the A's are a little closer. Sure, kids growing up who might have been Giants fans stand a better chance of becoming A's fans, and there is certainly more money in San Jose than in Oakland, but it will still take many, many years for the A's to actually be able to rival the Giants. However there's also a possibility that those kids, who maybe grow up A's fans, would also join in with their parents and stick with the Giants. I am pretty ambivalent about the A's moving to San Jose, and I think it would be a big boost to the franchise in the long run as well as the downtown area, but we're probably talking about 10-20 years before the team sees a sustained increase in interest. Moving to San Jose is not really the short term boost for the A's that many at the Mercury News paint it as. As with any new stadium, there would be an increase in ticket sales the first 2 years (which isn't hard considering what the A's draw in Oakland) but in terms of TV and merchandise money taking over Santa Clara County is a long term project for the A's.
