Nelson Doubleday feels sorry for the Wilpons

Feb 8, 2011, 2:58 PM EST

Fred Wilpon

Former Mets owner Nelson Doubleday when asked to comment on the Wilpons’ struggles:

“I’m just very sorry. I don’t know what they were doing. It is none of my business so I stay out of it. I’m just very sorry.”

I have no reason to doubt Doubleday’s sincerity when he talks about how sorry he is that the Wilpons are in a bad way.  I’m just sayin’ that if he were going to be insincere about it and if he were to take some joy at the fact that his former business partner with whom he had many squabbles was in trouble, he could have said this exact same thing.

I feel sorry for the Wilpons and I’m in the best shape of my life.

I feel anti-sorry for the Wilpons and I’m in the worst shape of my life.

    Didn’t he invent baseball?

Of course, Doubleday could have taked a few swipes at Wilpons, but Doubleday has one thing they are missing. Class.
