The Orioles and starter Jeremy Guthrie avoided arbitration today by agreeing to a one-year, $5.75 million contract. They split the difference between Guthrie’s demand of $6.5 million and the team’s offer of $5 million.
Guthire had a really nice year last year, posting a 3.83 ERA as the Orioles’ workhorse. If the O’s are even superficially competitive this year, he’s a nice rotation stabilizer. If not: pretty attractive trade bait.

You have to wonder why in these cases where they just split down the middle, why couldn’t that have been done three or four weeks ago?
