The Twins are running Drew Butera out there as Mauer’s backup and given Mauer’s propensity for injuries, it’d be nice to have a reliable–albeit mostly with the bat and not the glove–backup waiting in the wings.

In Boston, they’re looking at Varitek and Salty. I’m not totally down on Salty as an everyday player yet, he’s still pretty danged young to be considered a washout at this point, but adding another option couldn’t hurt a team that’s largely expected to be in contention for the World Series.
