It will be interesting to see how the Cardinals handle this situation though. There are a couple of differences that could impact what they do.
First - After the 2011 season they are going to have to decide if they want to exercise Carpenter's option at $15MM.
Second - They are also going to have to decide what to do about Pujols. Give in to his demands or close to it $28 to $30MM per for 9 or 10 years. A considerable increase over his current salary.
Considering the Cardinals it appears like to keep their team payroll between $90 and $100MM per season that's going to be hard to do and still work out all of the pieces. Let's assume they resign (Carpenter, Pujols) they still have Holliday's salary. Those 3 players alone for the 2012 season would cost the Cardinals about $60+MM for the 2012 season. That doesn't include Westbrook and Lohse another $20MM. That's $80MM +/- for just 5 players and that does not include anything for Wainwright. Then their is a whole bunch of Free Agents and arbitration players in 2012 that could easily add another $50MM to that total. The Cardinals could easily be looking at a payroll for 2012 of about $130MM without Wainwright. It would seem based on their history substantially over their comfort level based on history. What to do, what to do.
The obvious solution is let Pujols walk in 2012. Then their payroll going forward falls into place with their payroll history.
