Bobby Valentine would like to buy into the Mets

Feb 28, 2011, 8:22 AM EDT

Bobby Valentine horizontal

Bobby Valentine wants to buy into the Mets’ ownership group? Wow, Stamford, Connecticut must really overpay their civil servants:

Valentine has spoken with serious financial backers about lining up a bid to buy at least a portion of the Mets, a baseball official told ESPNNewYork.com.

“I’’ve talked to a number of people interested in purchasing part of the New York Mets, but I’’m not formally with any group that is actively pursuing this venture,” Valentine said Sunday night.

We talked a couple of weeks ago about famous investors. While a baseball man, I think Valentine fits into the MLK III/Donald Trump category, not the serious investor category, so members of Valentine Nation shouldn’t hold their breath.

Now, Wally Backman! There’s a guy to keep your eye on …

The ironic part of all this is that any change of ownership that involves baseball types could pull the Metropolitans out of the fire financially with dispatch.

Any man who gets tossed from a game, puts on a mustache, and comes back to the bench and gets away with is…..well, how could he *not* be qualified to own a professional sports franchise

As a resident of Connecticut, I can confirm that the state dramatically over-pays elected officials, administrators (of which there are far too many), and ceremonial appointees. In contrast, people that actually work for the state are not paid particularly well once you consider the level of taxes and cost of living.

I put this into the category of every other Bobby Valentine story: “Bobby Valentine’s Agent Getting Bobby Valentine’s Name in the Paper”

But I could be wrong. Maybe it’s “Bobby Valentine Thinks That If He Actually Owns the Mets, They Will Have to Let Him Manage.”

OMG, I never thought I would say this, but Valentine would actually be an upgrade in the ownership department.

Wonder if he’d have to leave ESPN due to conflict of interest.
