It’s unfortunate you’ve never taken the time to actually watch Carlos Beltran play in the past. When healthy – and for his first four years with the Mets – he has been a well above average fielding centerfielder. His WAR averages 5.475 from 2005 through 2008, second only to Sizemore as a CFer, and among the best for all outfielders during that time. He has certainly been an elite player in the past. Of course, now with his bad knees, he is not the fielder he once was. But his bat seems to still be there, and he should do OK in RF.

seriously? when is this double standard with the mets gonna stop? first. i've criticized beltran for yrs, and it wasnt because he sucked. his #'s never stated that he was below avg. the reason why i criticized him was because everyone seen what he did with houston in the playoffs. and we all thought that he was gonna be the same player when the mets made the playoffs in 06. and yes, it took him a good yr to get over that curve ball wainwright threw to him. we all saw it. but at the end, he was everything we could have hoped for. now hes getting older and father time is catching up to him. so in a business stand point, yes the move makes sense. now answer this question. what would u do if u were in his shoes?? remember people. more often then not, there is always a motive in someones decision. so why are we ripping him? last time i checked, its just as hard to play center field as it is right field in citifields. the mets actually need two cf's to play cf and rf. so lay off him guys, just enjoy the ride. unfortunatelly he wont be here for long. he'll probably be in an AL team because they have a dh spot. now that is a hypocrisy right there. name any other sport where u have two different set of rules for each league, and every teams playing field has different dimensions???? what kind of bull.... (crap) is that. so lay off beltran. he will be missed by most mets fans.

Totally agree, he was well worth his salt when he first signed with the Mets, and for a few years after that. When it kicked up to 18 mill + it was a little on the heavy side but he still had over 700 PA with #s nobody would be ashamed of. But that was 08'. The last 2 seasons he's been injured more than he's played.

I don't think he was overpaid for the first part of the contract. Mets fans have always killed this guy for no reason. He was at least the second best player on the team for years. I would have taken him on my team any day.

Are you guys smoking wacky tobaccy or what? Beltran has never been a "below average CF" Or even a below average offensive threat. He's over paid, Yes. He's injury prone, Yes. He's never going to play at his peak again, more than likely. But he's always been a good ball player.

I think you're selling Beltran short on his offense. Sure, his legs may not provide the best RF in the game but if it does reduce possible injuries (not saying for sure it will) then keeping his bat in the lineup for 450-500+ AB's is important. He can be a player that goes on a few hot streaks and I believe more likely to hit 15 or more HR's and an OPS around .850.

So a below average center field becoming a below average right field is the perfect solution? I like your logic. Beltran wasnt that good to begin with now almost 3 years and countless injuries later and hes suppose to be some kind of answer for the Mets? I dont see it. You can only get hurt some many times until your body and your skills cant recover no matter how health you are afterwards. I believe Beltran is well past that point. He could be injury pain for the rest of his career and he would still only be a shadow of what he was before all his injury problems. Which includes his production. He'll be lucky to max out as a .250, 10 hr, 50 rbi, 50 r, 10 s guy the rest of his career..
