That’s just Manny bein’ … a hard worker

Mar 7, 2011, 1:08 PM EDT

Tampa Bay Rays designated hitter Ramirez watches a MLB spring training game against the Baltimore Orioles from the dugout in Sarasota

MLB.com’s Anthony Castrovince is down at Rays’ camp today, and Joe Maddon told him that Manny Ramirez has been “a joy.” And a hard worker too. Maddon gave Manny the day off yesterday, but he showed up anyway and was taking hacks in the batting cage at 8 a.m.

Take that haters.

That is, assuming Manny knew what day it was and that he had the day off.  Sorry. Gotta admit that it’s a possibility.

I thought Manny always paid most of his attention toward hitting anyway. He just doesn’t care about defense, base running, clubhouse chemistry, political correctness with the media or perceived effort.

But hitting — that’s his baby.

For all the ink that’s been spilled about Manny, you just defined him perfectly in three sentences.

He looks very focused in that picture……perhaps the chimmi-changa cart is rolling by

“…Joe Maddon told him that Manny Ramirez has been “a joy.” And a hard worker too.”

I guess since he’ll no longer floating in the Sea of No Cares with his $20 mil/yr per contract has Manny all the sudden got religion? Or, perhaps now that he’s staring down the barrel of 40 he’s suddenly become aware of his baseball mortality.

Either way, money or age, he sold the fans and himself short. For everything he’s accomplished he’s going to be remembered as a selfish buffoon.

I’ll remember him as one of the greatest hitters of his (or any) generation.

He’s a professional athlete who’s never had a DUI or been accused of sexual assault. What else do you people want?!

Or, as Manny put it, “It’s not like I killed somebody.” How true, how true. Threw a few games, lied and dogged it in the field and on the bases, used PED’s, but no, he never killed anybody. If that’s your threshold, Manny’s your kind of guy.

“What else do you people want?!”

Show up, show up on time, be prepared for work and make a good faith effort to do your job to the best of your ability. The exact same thing I try to do and tell everybody that has ever worked for me. At $20 mil/yr that is the least that he should do.

So, merely not being Ben Roethlisberger makes one a good guy?

Manny’s on the best behavior of his life.

    New meme!
