Rosenthals, my friend. You need to get your facts straight. First of all Dice K cost the Red Sox $103,111,111.11 plus potentially another $8,000,000.00 in incentives if he were ever to reach them.
The $103,111,111.11 is comprised of $51,111,111.11 posting fee and $52,000,000.00 for a 6 year deal.
I don’t know how you come up with $40,000,000.00 but the Sox don’t even sniff Dice K for that. Red Sox fans my not want to consider the posting fee as part of the deal but the fact remains it cost the Red Sox $103,111,111.11 plus potentially another $8,000,000.00 to have him on their staff for 6 years.
And like I said previously I seriously doubt the Red Sox would consider that a wise investment regardless of whether or not it’s par for the course in baseball.

The Yankees were the laughingstock when they were the first team to lose a 3-0 lead in the playoffs (Which after the 09 win minimized it).

Signing someone to big money and it not working out (although if Dice-K signed for say 40 mil it would not seem that bad a signing) is just par for the course in MLB.

pisano, my friend. There is no doubt Igawa was a mistake and big mistake. But at least the Yankees didn’t compound that mistake by putting in the rotation like the Sox are doing with Dice K.

uyf1950….. it’s just like you said awhile back if the Yankees were to be as foolish and have signed him they would be the laughing stock of baseball, but if Boston or any other team signed him it seemed to be a good move. Other posters point to the Kei Igawa blunder, but remember while I’m the first to say he stinks he was 40 mil. not 101 mil. I can’t think of another signing that was a bigger waste of money as this one.

His whole argument was that the American training was not helping him and that he wanted to train like he did in Japan… apparently, he worked out at all the local pastry shops. I wish he would get cut…I do not know if I can take 2 more seasons of him.

The obvious question is what makes you think Dice K will or even can win 15 games this coming season.
Let’s assume he stays reasonably healthy in 2011 (which I’m not sure is a given) and pitches in 27 games in 2011. That would give him 100 games pitched in what will be 5 years. Based on the fact that he cost the Red Sox $100MM that comes to $1MM per game. Do you consider that a “decent return on their invenstment”? Because I’d be willing to bet the Red Sox don’t. That’s more then the Red Sox or the Yankees are paying any player on their active roster on a per game basis.

We all know that luxury tax does not matter when you have a bottomless pit of money. They prove this by keeping him off the roster and showing they can just throw that much money to the side.

Garbage. He had one decent year, one great year, and two injury years. If he wins 15 games this season, the Sox will have had a decent return on their investment. That said, I think Miller or Aceves could knock him out of the rotation, and Wake is still there. I wouldn’t weep.

By not being on the MLB roster, Igawa doesn’t count against the Yanks for luxury tax purposes. That’s why he’ll never see the big leagues anymore

Who’s he going to blame this year when he gets blown up? He lost all respect a couple years ago when he showed how soft he really was by blaming the Sox for wasting all the endurance he had built up for himself during his Japan years (something to that effect). meanwhile he had no explanantion for why he looked like he moved into Dunkin Donuts and fed off the menu for 24 hours a day. Im not even a Boston fan but this guy is a punk.

It really shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone for the past 2 years when he hasn’t been on the disabled list he has for the most part pitched pretty poorly.

To Pisano my friend. I prefer to say Dice K cost the Red Sox 92,000,000,000 (billion) yen. That’s what his posting fee and contract cost the Red Sox in Japanese currency.
