.278/.341/.456 in 1179 PA through 2008 primarily as a catcher (he signed his current contract in 2009). Those are pretty nice stats for any position, and outstanding from a catcher. He's hit .251/.318/.410 in 760 PA the last two years. That line would be acceptable if a) he had the defensive skills to stay at catcher (he's spent significant time at 1B and corner outfield positions) or b) he could stay healthy. The $5.1 deal didn't look bad at the time the Pirates signed him, but I'm not sure any team will take it on now. I think the Pirates best hope is to move him before the trade deadline to a team looking for a pinch hitter who can play the field in a pinch.

OK. I'm throwing a stupid question out there (not my first, won't be my last).
Before 2000 or so, I never heard of anyone having an oblique injury. What gives? Is it just that players work out more and are more muscle bound? Is it PED's? Where did this phenomenon start?
Dave Winfield and Reggie Jackson swung the bat harder than anyone I remember and neither of them had an "oblique strain". What happened to our obliques and why did we start straining them?
