The team’s workers’ compensation insurance will be on the hook. His employer on the date of injury, assuming his injury is work-related, will bear the responsibility of paying his medical bills. In most states, athletes are covered under workers’ comp, just like the rest of us. My office defends an NFL team for all of its work comp cases.

Craig, based upon my reading of the attached article explaining the process as it pertained to Ben Sheets in 2009, it appears the team he was pitching for when the injury was incurred pays the cost of the surgery. If he’s unsigned or a free agent when the injury is discovered but still officially an eligible nonretired player, the player’s association pays it. See the attached.
