His stats, though with limited use last year due to “forearm” issues, were outstanding. Not everyone can handle the closer role. The A’s have had several guys who were brilliant in the 7th and/or 8th but wilted in the 9th (Rhodes, Dotel). They’ve also had several guys step up to be effective closers. With all their veterans, let’s hope first that Bailey won’t need surgery,. and second one of the vets can step up.

On the bright side, they’ve got plenty of in-house options, but that means everyone slides into a different role than projected by getting bumped up a spot on the depth chart.

I guess they could always call the Twins (Capps) or Yankees (Soriano) about trading for an extra closer, if they get desperate?!
