I agree with you; however, it was a long time ago when McCarver was broadcasting Mets games with not much more than local access. This time period was before many of the people who read HBT were even born. Therefore, they didn’t see the evolution from reasonably good announcer to national bore. They’ve only seen the end result.

Yeah, guys can look bad in one game and great in the next in Spring, but if you picked up on his vulnerability you’re seeing what the pros down there saw a while ago. And now what’s going on is that the opposition pitching is putting an exclamation mark on that observation. If he doesn’t make an adjustment in the coming week the Braves will need an emergency first baseman.

One Spring Training game is hardly a legitimate evaluation tool, but I was fortunate to take in the Braves playing the Cards in Jupiter on Monday. Minor looked pretty impressive. His command was good and his breaking ball was sharp. I was especially glad to see Freddy Freeman’s name in the line-up. But sadly, I have to report to Braves fans that he looked awfully vulnerable to the off speed breaking pitches. He whiffed his first 3 times up and grounded out weakly in his other at bat. Again, it was only one game, Kyle Lohse was particularly effective, and the Braves only managed 2 hits in 10 innings, so it wasn’t all Freeman’s failures, but Freeman’s swing appears to have a loop in it as he tries to lift the ball, and that may spell some serious contact problems.

Buster’s evaluator had the Yankers getting Cliff Lee too. I have zero respect for Olney anymore anyway. Jayson Stark is the best from the worldwide leader…by a mile.
