Casey Blake underwent a “precautionary” MRI exam on his injured back and the results showed lower thoracic spine inflammation, with Tony Jackson of reporting that “he’s expected to miss minimal time.”

There’s no timetable yet for his return, but Blake reported feeling some improvement yesterday and is officially listed as day-to-day.

Blake struggled with back problems for a big chunk of last season as well, so the 37-year-old certainly isn’t out of the woods yet. Should he miss significant time the obvious replacement is Jamey Carroll, although he may play second base with Juan Uribe shifting to third base.

Mattingly has indicated that Carroll would play 2B with Uribe moving to 3B due to the former being more of a middle infielder and the latter better suited for 3B. With Blake not expected back next year, you can pretty well mark down Uribe as the Dodger 3B for the final two years of his contract. I like Blake but at this point the Dodgers would be better served with Carroll in the line up most days, especially if he reaches base at a similar rate as last year. Blake could be useful off the bench while maintaining a leadership presence in the locker room.
