Royals announce Luke Hochevar and his 5.60 career ERA as Opening Day starter

Mar 21, 2011, 1:15 PM EDT

Kansas City announced its rotation and as expected Luke Hochevar will get the Opening Day start against the Angels despite a 5.60 career ERA that includes a 4.81 mark in 18 outings last year.

Of course, the Royals being the Royals they don’t really have any clearly better options.

Jeff Francis, Kyle Davies, and Bruce Chen will follow Hochevar in the rotation and Vin Mazzaro has won the final spot, but he’ll begin the season at Triple-A because the Royals won’t need a fifth starter for a couple weeks.

If healthy Francis is a pretty good bet to emerge as the Royals’ best starter this season, but that isn’t really saying much. Starting a guy with a 5.60 ERA on Opening Day and it not being a particularly crazy decision is a big part of why the Royals are very capable of losing 95-plus games for a fourth straight season. Their lineup has a chance to be pretty decent, but the pitching staff is going to be ugly.

    Ugly is kind.

I think people will be surprised by this team this year…certainly, the pitching isn’t where it should be, but I think offensively the Royals can hold up well with the remainder of the American League. Will they make the playoffs? No! But, I think they’re going to to turn some heads this year.

Those turning heads will either be away from the ugliness on the field, or quick neck twitches as visiting balls leave the ballpark heading for Omaha.

Luke Hochevar is a really good Quadruple-A pitcher.

The Royals need to make Robinson Tejeda a starter. When the guy was starting 2 seasons ago for a bit and even 3 seasons ago he gave some good outings. He’s definately a better option than Davies and by the looks of Hochavar he’s a better option there too.

The Twin’s made the right move by freeing Duensing from the pen. Texas did the same with C.J. Time to make sure Tejeda doesn’t get trampled by the bull. Let him out! :-)

I’m wondering how much of this is a PR stunt to say: “Hey Look, it’s our number 1 draft pick starting on Opening Day.”

Based on spring and last years performance Bruce Chen or Jeff Francis should be the OD starter.

Mike Montgomery should be up by July

mike montovery should be up by april 1st..I am aware of what the Royals have in their system coming soon but then how long will they be able to keep them. Its ridiculous. They’ll be able to keep 1 out of 5 that become really good. And they dont become really, really good until their on the team that the Royals have traded them to..Its just not ever going to materialize in KC again. They weren’t able to keep players 10 years ago, Theres no way they can lock them up now. And thats unfortunate. As long as they’ve been around and they still cant lock up eneough players to make a difference. I hate it for them
