New footage of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig unearthed

Ruth Gehrig

You may have seen still photos of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig in their “Bustin’ Babes” and “Larrupin’ Lous” barnstorming uniforms before, but the New York Times has a story — and some footage — of some film of them wearing the duds.  Sadly it isn’t game action. They’re just hanging around. Ruth gets on the back of a pony. Gehrig holds a baby.

It’s not much, but it’s something.  Until I read the article I never realized just how little actual footage of these guys exists. Apparently the Hall of Fame has only an hour’s worth of film of Ruth, and I assume that includes silly stuff like him sitting on the hood of a car, wearing that king’s crown and winking and what have you.

I can’t fathom that “larruping” was a common enough verb in 1930 to be used in this context, yet has entirely disappeared from the world 80 years later, to such an extent that Microsoft underlines it with a squiggly red line when typed.

And Microsoft doesn’t even underline “squiggly”.

“I had a better year than he did!” is one of my favorite baseball-related quotes to this day.

“Ruth gets on the back of a pony. Gehrig holds a baby.” It would suffice to say that baseball was played a lot different back then.

i am currently in possession of this photo. well there are two. one with babe ruth on the pony and gehrig holding the little boy. the other has ruth leaning a little on the pony with one boy sitting on the pony the boys two brothers and gehrig standing next to them. the youngest boy passed away several years ago. the pictures have been donated to the blue star mothers to raise money for the troups. would any one know about how much they would be worth?
