I tried to comment earlier but Wordpress refused to acknowledge my existence.

By now, all AL West fans of this blog know my opinion of the preseason predictions: The Angels have the team doctor with the greatest reputation (Dr. Yocum), so after the team doctors for Oakland and Texas meet in single combat, if both are rendered unfit to continue, then LA will win by default.

You can blame this metaphorical exercise squarely on Old Gator. Ever since he gifted me with a copy of Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian I have only been able to think metaphorically. So, for those of us still thinking in absolutes, the A's and the Rangers are better teams than LA on paper. But both are injury prone. If both teams are significantly diminished by injuries, LA could have just enough to back into the West title because they are normally much, much more healthy over the course of a season, as a team. But that's the only scenario that works for LA this year. And of course Seattle is far out of it.

"It’s hard to conclude anything other than Moreno misread the free agent market..."

Shouldn't some of the blame also go to Tony Reagins for this? Not to mention the Vernon Wells trade disaster...

Thanks, Craig. The week is long enough as it is without having to read this first thing Monday morning. Yes, Napoli was a big loss, but calling Rivera a useful outfielder is being a bit generous. Wells will be a big improvement there. The only reason the A's finished above them was because we lost Morales for half the season, and the A's were just slightly less mediocre than the Angels. If Kendrys comes back before the All-Star break (at this point, who knows?)...well, anyway you slice it, it's going to be a challenging year. 2nd Place.
