The only source for that is LaRue: "Does it suck that my career is over because Johnny Cueto started kicking me in the head? Yes, it sucks."

Cynics might think his retirement had more to do with the age (37), his historically bad performance, or the 20 prior concussions. Alternatively, you can paint him like Tony Conigliaro or Thurman Munson.

I was at the game and saw endless T-V coverage and film of the incident. Cuteo is a big jerk for ending the career of LaRue. We don't hate the Redbirds here, but we do like to beat them. Not the way Cueto did as a drunk street fighter, but on the field. I should say too, that LaRue is a fan favorite here too. Cueto lost a little fan love over the incident, but still a fan fav. We don't like to win that way. Anyway, they beat our a$$ last year.

As a Cards fan, I'm kind of hoping in some ways that falling short this season would leave Pujols with an "unfinished business" incentive to help the club re-sign him.
