killa... having had the same injury recently myself, I doubt that Evan had ANY warning that his oblique was about to spaz. Per my earlier post, when an oblique flares up it happens suddenly and without warning and it is difficult to then straighten up and because of its' location can practically take your breathe away.

As far as I know there's know real way to prevent it from happening either. It's brought on by too much bending and quick side to side movement (which of course is what infielders do).

I wonder if Evan actually alerted the trainers and/or Joe Maddon to his discomfort prior to the game starting? Given Joe Maddon's fairly liberal use of days off, I'd have to think that if Dirt Dog had told his manager he was a sore, he'd have given him a day off. Had he alerted the trainers to the issue, the Rays wouldn't have to go nearly a month without one of their precious few all round threats at the plate (and I'm a Rays fan).

The mentality is to go out there and suck it up for a guy like Evan, who has played through some stuff that other guys would have sat through. But discretion is the better part of valor, and hopefully this episode will teach Evan that there are times where you just need to listen to what your body is telling you. Now, had he taken Saturday off, I cannot say for sure it would have prevented this. But it may well have been the smart thing to do.

The seeming increase in oblique injuries isn't so much coincidental as it is an increasing emphasis in coaching defense for infielders. The more an infielder bends over and twists and turns in anticipation of a ground ball or in practice, the more likely that they'll have problems with their oblique muscles. The biggest problem is that right now trainers don't have a handle on how to train infielders to avoid these injuries.

Another oblique injury? Craig referred to this as the "in fashion" injury for this season. Actually he called it "the new black for 2011" or something. Looks like the new black is still with us. I wonder if this is an elaborate sting to catch whomever has targeted the Long Glorious One? The car theft & the burglary speak of enemy action towards him. I bet he's not injured at all, but laying up in his house, new gun in hand, face painted camo, in the basement with some beers and some snacks, just awaitin for the trip wires to tremble then he'll POUNCE....and deal swift and terrible justice. Either that or he has the new black bad. Or something.

Steve Stone is fantastic, no question. Harrelson obviously has the support of many (though not all) Sox fans; plus he's got enough suction with ownership to stay in that booth as long as he likes (most franchises probably WOULDN'T want the worst GM in their history calling games, good for Jerry Reinsdorf, looking beyond that).

Harrelson's homer-ism goes way beyond what might be expected of a local announcer, he blames umps constantly, he pouts for innings at a time when he feels that calls have against the White Sox, sometimes leaving Stone to work alone (which is an improvement, but terribly unprofessional). I can't think of a time when I ever felt like I was learning something about baseball from Harrelson.

If there were a stat like WAR of VORP for announcers, Harrleson's would be negative.

lukehart... I totally get why unless you're a White Sox fan there's a good chance that you may not like Hawk Harrelson, and that's ok, there are announcers who I can't stand either (for example, the always self-promoting, never shut up Tim Mc Carver).

It's a cheap shot though to challenge the baseball credibility of the White Sox TV team of Harrelson and Steve Stone though. Both of these guys truly know baseball. You just have to overlook the obvious homer-ism.

The only thing that I don't like though about Hawk is his dumb calls of "stretch, stretch" every time a White Sox player hits a deep fly ball. Now THAT is truly annoying!

Pulling/tearing an oblique muscle can be incredibly uncomfortable. The reason I say uncomfortable and not painful (as I've had this happen to me a few times over the past year or so), is because it's literally very difficult to straighten out and stand up right because when you try to, the muscle starts to spaz and pinch again. It can be enough to literally take your breathe away.

Bottom line? This isn't one of those J.D. Drew/Nick Johnson type sissy excuses to take a 15 day paid mini-vacation off while sitting on the DL; only rest, muscle relaxants and massage can get the muscles to all calm down enough to be able to go back to playing.

Hawk Harrelson made a great observation yesterday during the nationally televised White Sox game on WGN when he said, "infielders can survive in the minor leagues playing upright, but in the major leagues the games just too fast and to be successful you have to be able to get down while waiting for the ball". Can't do that with an angry oblique flaring up.

On the bright side though Rays fans, the injury will now give Evan ample time to go out shopping to replace his AK-47 assault rifle and sock full or 5 and 6 figure Rolex's that he lost in the burglary or his rented house. Heck, he might even pick up a set of brass knuckles, a bazooka and some hand grenades too! Never know when you might need 'em you know!
