Matt Holliday spoke to reporters yesterday for the first time since undergoing an emergency appendectomy last week and Matthew Leach of MLB.com reports that “it was quite clear that he’s not in any shape to be doing anything athletic right now.”

Holliday has been shut down from all physical activity for at least five days, but stressed to Leach that he still hopes to avoid the disabled list, saying: “I think I can play before 15 days if they can make it without me for the first week.”

Leach notes that Andres Torres last season and Reggie Sanders in 2005 both made it back into the lineup within two weeks following appendectomies, although in some cases the timetable can be as long as a month.
