By the way, in case an educational moment is more appropriate here than my snark above: if the Blue Jays release Wells, they still owe him his full contract. By trading him, they rid themselves of an $85M obligation. It doesn’t matter what the Blue Jays got in return.

the napoli-for-francisco trade looked bad when it happened and its looking even worse now. we essentially traded wells for a guy thats gonna struggle to hit .250 this year (rivera) and a guy on the DL who looks to have lost his velocity, the only thing that makes him remotely worthwhile. if there wasnt cash involved we couldve just released wells and gotten the same result: nothing
