Most rational Phillies fans know that Werth didn't spurn the Phillies. The booing probably has more to do with some of the things that he said on the way out, and the famous "I hate the Phillies" quote from Spring Training. That being said, booing him is counterproductive, because it gives him more incentive to stick it to us. It's the Rod Barajas syndrome.

Werth wouldnt have got booed if he kept his mouth shut. No one was mad at him when he left he probably would have gotten cheered. But he has said some off the wall stuff since signing with the Nats about the Phillies so he deserves to get booed.

And dont act like all we do is boo we cheared Dawkins, Westbrook, Burrell, Iverson and even Mcnabb when they returned. The ones that get booed are the ones that deserve it.

San Fran classy? I was at each of playoff games in San Fran and sat in the Phillies family section. When trying to reach our seats we were given the finger, had various obscenities yelled at and were even called gay, faggot Philies lovers (and in all places, really?). Giant fans in surrounding section were kicked out in each and every game for yelling threats and throwing things at us. Jason werth classy? Having an affair with another players wife, yelling at a child in the stand and never doing one charitable thing doesn't remind me of class. The only thing he spends money on is his new mansion he's building in Alexandria Virginia.

BTW CBP is not as much of a hitters park as you think. They have a park factor of below 1 last season.

Most players play better at home. Fact. Which has no bearing on this "protection" topic anyway. And I don't know how this has strayed to a different topic now.

Ignoring the fact that players and managers believe in protection, and build their lineups to optimize this because of flawed statistical results is a blind way to look at things imo. Common sense and most of professional baseball says it is real, and true. Hey if Gillick believes it, so do I. And if that's not proof I don't know what is. The man is a baseball genius and builds lineups with protection in mind.

As a Phils fan...

All considered, he doesn't deserve to be be booed. Just like Pat-the-Bat, when he returned, we gave him a standing ovation and the booed the hell out of him when he hit the first of 2 HRs on his second appearance. Yes, Pat had more tenor, but Werth contributed significantly(relative to what we used to have out there) from 2007-2009.

However, I think the Phils fans will ultimately boo him, but I think it will be to more so collectively show the Nationals fans that we were present in their own park, overpowering their own cheering. I think it's going to be more a slight to the DC fans, rather than to Werth. Had our opening series been at CBP (north), he gets a standing ovation, without a doubt. It's a different dynamic being in DC.

And for my fellow Phils fans that anxious to boo him, I'd like them to consider whether or not we would have brought back Cliff Lee had we signed Werth. Despite Werth's contributions, I'm much more happy to have Lee back in town.

But Jonny, you're applying how ALL teams play at home to one player. Just because a team as a whole does that doesn't mean each player does. Offense are typically optimized (as best they can) to get the most out of their home park and thus should consistently out-hit their opponents. But not every player on that offense will.

Even if protection is real, Werth has had Ryan Zimmerman hitting behind him. Zimmerman's OPS through the first week is sitting at 1.022.

However, Pat the Bat was here for longer, came up through the system, was here through the famine, and was here for the jubilation. Werth isn't a "lifelong" Phil.

I agree with the above with one exception. We should not boo anyone that has helped bring a championship to Philly.

ie: Don't boo:
Moses Malone, Mo Cheeks, Steve Carlton, Jimmy Rollins etc. and for god's sake not Cole Hamels for one bad start! He should have permanent immunity in my book. That fact that he came from sunny Southern California to live and win world series games here, where we have about 10 nice days a year, should be werth something!

ps There's about 125 million reasons to boo Werth, he can take it, he's smiling all the way to the bank.

Is it okay to boo Jayson Werth? Yes. Is that irrational? Yes. That’s what baseball fans do – they act irrational. We spend god awful sums of money to watch a bunch of seasonal mercenaries come to town, and we cheer as though our life and well being depended on what they did. Most of the time our well being DOES depend on what they do! Is that irrational? YES!

We fans have an irrational attachment to baseball, which is why Werth was able to make $126 million dollars. Don’t complain about the benign downsides - really, boo-ing? What, his feelings may be hurt?

After he won the 1997 Masters, Tiger Woods had lunch with Arnold Palmer. TW confessed that he was simply overwhelmed with his schedule – long hours on the range, 2 hours a day for interviews, photo shoots, business meetings, it was just nuts. “I can’t be a normal 21 year old” Tiger told Arnold. Arnie just grinned and said “You’re right Tiger, you’re not a normal 21 year old. Normal 21 year olds don’t have $50 million in the bank. If you don’t like it, give the money back”

Not that Mr. Werth is complaining, but should he not like being boo-ed (by anyone), then he can waltz off now into a well paid retirement
