Most players play better at home. Fact. Which has no bearing on this “protection” topic anyway. And I don’t know how this has strayed to a different topic now.

Ignoring the fact that players and managers believe in protection, and build their lineups to optimize this because of flawed statistical results is a blind way to look at things imo. Common sense and most of professional baseball says it is real, and true. Hey if Gillick believes it, so do I. And if that’s not proof I don’t know what is. The man is a baseball genius and builds lineups with protection in mind.

All considered, he doesn’t deserve to be be booed. Just like Pat-the-Bat, when he returned, we gave him a standing ovation and the booed the hell out of him when he hit the first of 2 HRs on his second appearance. Yes, Pat had more tenor, but Werth contributed significantly(relative to what we used to have out there) from 2007-2009.

However, I think the Phils fans will ultimately boo him, but I think it will be to more so collectively show the Nationals fans that we were present in their own park, overpowering their own cheering. I think it’s going to be more a slight to the DC fans, rather than to Werth. Had our opening series been at CBP (north), he gets a standing ovation, without a doubt. It’s a different dynamic being in DC.

And for my fellow Phils fans that anxious to boo him, I’d like them to consider whether or not we would have brought back Cliff Lee had we signed Werth. Despite Werth’s contributions, I’m much more happy to have Lee back in town.

Even if protection is real, Werth has had Ryan Zimmerman hitting behind him. Zimmerman’s OPS through the first week is sitting at 1.022.

As for Thome? He’s an anomaly. We would cheer that guy tying his shoes.

Would I laugh if it happened? Absolutely. It’s up to the Nat fans to buy more tickets and cheer louder.

ps There’s about 125 million reasons to boo Werth, he can take it, he’s smiling all the way to the bank.

We fans have an irrational attachment to baseball, which is why Werth was able to make $126 million dollars. Don’t complain about the benign downsides – really, boo-ing? What, his feelings may be hurt?
