Boof Bonser, who was pitching for Triple-A Buffalo after failing to make the Mets out of spring training, will undergo Tommy John surgery and miss the rest of the season.

It’ll be the second lost year in the last three for Bonser, who missed 2009 after shoulder surgery.  He returned to pitch 25 innings for the Red Sox and A’s last year, posting a 6.12 ERA.

Bonser allowed three runs in eight innings for the Mets this spring.  He was injured Sunday while making his first start for the Bisons.

Did you know that there is such a thing as “karmic derision,” when your name itself brings you rotten luck because it is so ridiculous that it attracts retribution for everything you did wrong in your past lives in premature and unnaturally concentrated ways ? Really. One of my disgraced ancestors told me so during an otherwise uneventful game of Ouija Scrabble last night (I won with “Brobdingnagian” again). A spirit identifying himself as Benoit Mandelbrot suggested that “Boof Bonser” may well be the karmic equivalent of a – ready for this? – strange attractor.

And who am I to call out Benoit Mandelbrot?
