'lions, sounds like you're bucking for a job managing. That's some innovative ideaing you've got there. I'm not unsympathetic to the argument but I warn you, soon as you start constantly bringing your young stud closer out for the final out in the 8th and a complete 9th and expecting him to hold up all season long, you're gonna be branded 'paper "Dusty Baker" lions' if the dude breaks down. IMO closing means throwing hard and relying on 1 or 2 pitches. This means exposing them to more injury if they go an extra 1/3 inning a lot, so injury is more likely.

I am not trying to bait anyone, just pointing out that Washington (like almost all MLB managers) regularly looses games without ever getting his best reliever on the mound.
.
Who cares about the 9th or extra innings if you can't get there? There were runners on 1st and 2nd with 2 out, the game was on the line, and he brought in a guy with a career 7.59 ERA instead of a guy with a career 2.34 ERA.
.
In high leverage situations, you should ALWAYS use your best reliever first, and then go in descending order of goodness....to do otherwise is to inefficiently use your resources.

Pay no attention Senor. 'lions is trying to bait me. Its all he has against Ron Washington, who's team is consistently better managed than the Cards. It seems with all the talent on the Cardinal's staff, they can't overcome their lousy managerial decisions. RW, of course, is almost ALWAYS bailed out by his talent, as opposed to being actually better at his job than LaRussa (that's how it reads if you follow paperlion's logic at any rate). Jealousy is a fickle mistress. Hang in there 'lions! Looks like your boys are playing better in spite of Tony The Decisionator LaRussa.
