Reds’ pitcher Mike Leake arrested for stealing $60 worth of stuff from a Macy’s

UPDATE: John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer has an update:

Leake, of Ludlow, was arrested after Macy’s department store loss prevention employees stopped the Reds pitcher today after they say he took $59.88 in property from the store.

He was apparently caught on video.  And here’s the police report.

Leake makes around half a million bucks a year, by the way, and got a $2.7 million signing bonus in 2009, so your guess as to why he’s stealing T-shirts from Macy’s is as good a guess as mine.

4:05 PM: Reds pitcher Mike Leake was arrested for misdemeanor theft in Cincinnati this afternoon.  At the moment there is no additional information about it.  Until we get more — which we’ll obviously update when we hear it — I’m going to wildly guess “dine and dash.”

Leake has three starts for the Reds this season. He’s 2-0 with a 5.40 ERA.  At the plate he’s 2 for 7 with no steals, ironically enough.

    Good looking mug shot though. He’ll go in there after Crisp on the ‘mugshot of the year’ competition. In the interests of voter fairness I’m gong alphabetical. This won’t last; I’m diligently scouring the interwebs for Lenny’s mug shot. Surely that has to be somewhere?

    According to his Wikipedia page: “On April 18, 2011, Leake was arrested on a misdemeanor theft charge after he was accused of removing the tags from six shirts at a Macy’s store and leaving without paying for them.”

    Loving the dykstra references. Philly sportstalk 610wip reported today that Lenny recented ripped out his kitchen sink that was worth $40,000 and tried to sell it

    This is so bizarre, I’m struggling to think of a comparable case. Sure, high level pro athletes commit crimes–but usually not shoplifting. Is Leake in the middle of some kind of nervous breakdown, a la Winona Ryder when she got caught shoplifting a while back? Was it some moment of madness, a la Hugh Grant when he got caught with a hooker on Sunset Blvd.? (not that ‘moment of madness’ is really much of an explanation…) I can understand how Lenny Dykstra’s weasly mind works, there are lots of guys like him in the world. But I literally can’t imagine what was going on in Leake’s head.

    This is either one of the dumber things a pro athlete has done or he’s a kleptomaniac. And it could be the latter. Growing up, my brother had a friend who would swipe things from people’s houses, and he couldn’t control himself. If that’s the case, I hope he gets help. If it’s not, he’s a moron.

    Ya know, he could supplement that pitiful income of his by selling this stuff on e**y like all the other ex-cons do. Steal, list and sell. Do nothing and profit from being a criminal.

    I look up to a guy like this. A real role model.
