Reds’ pitcher Mike Leake arrested for stealing $60 worth of stuff from a Macy’s

Leake mugshot

UPDATE: John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer has an update:

Leake, of Ludlow, was arrested after Macy’s department store loss prevention employees stopped the Reds pitcher today after they say he took $59.88 in property from the store.

He was apparently caught on video.  And here’s the police report.

Leake makes around half a million bucks a year, by the way, and got a $2.7 million signing bonus in 2009, so your guess as to why he’s stealing T-shirts from Macy’s is as good a guess as mine.

4:05 PMReds pitcher Mike Leake was arrested for misdemeanor theft in Cincinnati this afternoon.  At the moment there is no additional information about it.  Until we get more — which we’ll obviously update when we hear it — I’m going to wildly guess “dine and dash.”

Leake has three starts for the Reds this season. He’s 2-0 with a 5.40 ERA.  At the plate he’s 2 for 7 with no steals, ironically enough.

This must be a mistake. The don’t sell Ed Hardy at Macy’s, do they?

  2. cur68 - Apr 18, 2011 at 4:14 PM

Good looking mug shot though. He’ll go in there after Crisp on the ‘mugshot of the year’ competition. In the interests of voter fairness I’m gong alphabetical. This won’t last; I’m diligently scouring the interwebs for Lenny’s mug shot. Surely that has to be somewhere?

    • Old Gator - Apr 18, 2011 at 8:28 PM

And when they ran his profile, they discovered that he was married to both Winona Ryder and Lindsay Lohan.

      • cur68 - Apr 18, 2011 at 8:44 PM

And was keeping Amy Winehouse on the side.

  3. clydeserra - Apr 18, 2011 at 4:15 PM

This must be a mistake. They don’t sell Ed Hardy at Macy’s, do they?

  5. steve keane - Apr 18, 2011 at 4:21 PM

with the NFL players locked out it’s nice to see Major League baseball players pick up the slack for police blotters entries. Solidarity for union brothers

  6. marshmallowsnake - Apr 18, 2011 at 4:22 PM

Wow…I guess $425K is not a lot of money when you need to steal something worth $59…

    • henryd3rd - Apr 19, 2011 at 6:52 AM

Money doesn’t go as far as it once went.

According to his Wikipedia page: “On April 18, 2011, Leake was arrested on a misdemeanor theft charge after he was accused of removing the tags from six shirts at a Macy’s store and leaving without paying for them.”

    • clydeserra - Apr 18, 2011 at 4:30 PM

6 shirts for $60? that doesn’t seem right.

      • yankeesfanlen - Apr 18, 2011 at 4:36 PM

REDiculous as it might seem, they were REDuced at the store with the RED star.

    • The Rabbit - Apr 18, 2011 at 4:46 PM

He stole 6 shirts for a total of $60 worth of merchandise????
I’m thinking that Leake probably needs an intervention from “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy”.

    • henryd3rd - Apr 19, 2011 at 6:54 AM

$10.00 shirts! Where that store? I need some shirts! Were they manufactures seconds?

  9. ThatGuy - Apr 18, 2011 at 4:40 PM

How do you live that down in a locker room full of pros?

    • marshmallowsnake - Apr 18, 2011 at 5:17 PM

Seriously, right? Unless there is some super secret bet going on where he was put up to this.

    • henryd3rd - Apr 19, 2011 at 6:55 AM

      Grow and beard

“Not ready to be out-done, Lenny Dykstra stole 6 rolls of toilet paper from the bathroom at his neighborhood Kwik Trip.”

    • marshmallowsnake - Apr 18, 2011 at 5:20 PM

Dykstra would steal toilet paper from your hand, as you were using it…

      • JBerardi - Apr 18, 2011 at 8:18 PM

Nah, he’d buy it off you with his kid’s bonus money.

  11. bloodysock - Apr 18, 2011 at 4:59 PM

Dude must have needed a couple of Snuggies badly.

  12. Gobias Industries - Apr 18, 2011 at 5:09 PM

Will this ruin his Hall of Fame chances? Discuss.

(Why, no, I’m not being serious. Thanks for asking.)

  13. gallaghedj311 - Apr 18, 2011 at 5:24 PM

Loving the dykstra references. Philly sportstalk 610wip reported today that Lenny recented ripped out his kitchen sink that was worth $40,000 and tried to sell it

  14. dcburden - Apr 18, 2011 at 5:27 PM

If there were in fact six shirts, does that count as one CS or six?

    • clydeserra - Apr 18, 2011 at 5:34 PM

we really need to know the ratio before we can give him the green light

  15. fat4jc - Apr 18, 2011 at 5:45 PM

Never realized this, but Mike Leake couple double as Kirk Cameron….okay, a “grunge” Kirk Cameron….

    • fat4jc - Apr 18, 2011 at 5:48 PM

      *could double*

    • jwbiii - Apr 18, 2011 at 6:24 PM

I think he looks like Marcel from “Top Chef.”

    • marshmallowsnake - Apr 18, 2011 at 6:48 PM

Or a strung out Ed Norton.

  16. oikosjeremy - Apr 18, 2011 at 5:54 PM

This is so bizarre, I’m struggling to think of a comparable case. Sure, high level pro athletes commit crimes–but usually not shoplifting. Is Leake in the middle of some kind of nervous breakdown, a la Winona Ryder when she got caught shoplifting a while back? Was it some moment of madness, a la Hugh Grant when he got caught with a hooker on Sunset Blvd.? (not that ‘moment of madness’ is really much of an explanation…) I can understand how Lenny Dykstra’s weasly mind works, there are lots of guys like him in the world. But I literally can’t imagine what was going on in Leake’s head.

  17. gbsimons - Apr 18, 2011 at 5:55 PM

This is either one of the dumber things a pro athlete has done or he’s a kleptomaniac. And it could be the latter. Growing up, my brother had a friend who would swipe things from people’s houses, and he couldn’t control himself. If that’s the case, I hope he gets help. If it’s not, he’s a moron.

    • florida727 - Apr 18, 2011 at 6:14 PM

Love the sympathetic closing. Goes from either ‘ getting help’ to ‘moron’, with no pitstop in between. Priceless. Kind of like the 6 t-shi… oh, never mind.

  18. hep3 - Apr 18, 2011 at 6:14 PM

    Is Leake dating Winona Ryder?

    • kjd2121 - Apr 18, 2011 at 6:39 PM

No no no, come on he’s got more class than that. Try Lindsey Lohan!!!

  19. juicebox129 - Apr 18, 2011 at 6:21 PM

Now him and the tags are going to have something in common… cut

  20. thejokewriter - Apr 18, 2011 at 6:22 PM

    He should’ve stolen a hairbrush…the jagweed.

  21. chetwynnr - Apr 18, 2011 at 7:07 PM

Mike, you’ve got to get on base BEFORE you can steal. Oh, and another thing…

  22. hank10 - Apr 18, 2011 at 7:45 PM

To paraphrase an old TV commercial: ‘How do you think they got so rich?’

  23. jupiter999 - Apr 18, 2011 at 9:28 PM

Ya know, he could supplement that pitiful income of his by selling this stuff on e**y like all the other ex-cons do. Steal, list and sell. Do nothing and profit from being a criminal.

I look up to a guy like this. A real role model.

For cell block 12 that is.

  24. botkins24 - Apr 18, 2011 at 9:40 PM
