Report: The McCourts are being investigated by the IRS too

Apr 20, 2011, 6:21 PM EDT

McCourt Divorce Trial Continues With Ownership Of Dodgers In Contention Getty Images

If the MLB takeover of the Dodgers isn’t enough, check this out. It’s from TMZ so consider the source, but really, would any of this surprise you at this point?

The Internal Revenue Service is investigating the finances surrounding the Dodgers as well as Frank and Jamie McCourt … the IRS investigation was triggered by a number of disclosures surrounding the McCourt divorce.  In particular, IRS agents are interested in the fact that the McCourts took $145 million from the team and paid no taxes (certain court documents place the figure at around $105 million, but we’re told it’s actually $145 mil). The IRS is also interested in the fact that the McCourt children have drawn a salary from the team but performed no apparent services to justify the payout.

When it rains it pours.

Hooo boy. I thought things couldn’t get worse there in sunny California. Now the guys that took down Capone are on Frank’s case? He’s doomed.

    Words you never want to hear no matter how much money you have;

‘Hello, my name is Special Agent Jones from the IRS.”

Special Agent is IRS speak for “we own you now”.

    • Old Gator - Apr 20, 2011 at 8:25 PM

Nope, it’s IRSspeak for “We own your ass now.”

      • bigharold - Apr 20, 2011 at 10:09 PM

Maybe they should have sent the IRS after Bin Laden?

It only gets better! Praise be to the Great Dodger in the sky!

…and MLB has seemed reluctant to let Mark Cuban into the owner’s club, why?!

    • Old Gator - Apr 20, 2011 at 8:28 PM

Because he has a mind in his brain. Because he puts the fans first. Because he’s not a stuffed suit. Because he would make Bud’s placid, phlegmatic existence miserable.

Ever get a new puppy when you still have your fourteen year old hound hanging around on his arthritic hindquarters and see how the puppy insists on dancing around and getting in the old dog’s face? Bud is the old dog. But then, he was born that way….

Agreed–Cuban would raise the bar too high for the Old Boy Owners’ comfort. Could you imagine Cuban coming in with a team, not treating it like his personal piggy bank, caring about the fans and becoming genuinely beloved by them, and shaking up the stodginess of the owner’s cabal?

And if you’re Peter Angelos, the specter of Orioles fans asking why you can’t be more like Cuban is enough to keep you awake nights.

    Dear IRS.

Re: all that stuff you’ve just realized you want to investigate about the McCourt’s…

    I knew it already.

Because of my thorough investigation of Hardballtalk.

It’s usually conducted during the hours of 9-5, M-F.

You know: when I’m at work, getting paid for doing, basically, nothing.

Though, I swear: that salary’s not enough money to interest you.

If you really want to get obsessive, you can waste even more time at Josh Fisher’s Dodger Divorce website.

      • lbehrendt - Apr 20, 2011 at 9:26 PM

Josh’s site is one of the very best on the web. Not a time waste, but more like a place you don’t want to go if you’re working on a deadline, because you may not emerge until after the deadline is passed..

Al Capone couldn’t escape the IRS either. Hope they get put on the IRS spit and cooked for a very long time.

No one deserves an IRS investigation more than two people who spent 50k annually on haircuts.

    • Old Gator - Apr 20, 2011 at 8:30 PM

Jamie looks a lot like the governor of Arizona – without all the abyssal wrinkles, I mean….

      • jwbiii - Apr 20, 2011 at 11:58 PM

Just give her some more time havin’ fun in the warm California sun.

  9. Reflex - Apr 20, 2011 at 8:58 PM

Now if they would investigate the Wilpons….

    • mrznyc - Apr 20, 2011 at 11:53 PM

      They ARE investigating the Wilpons
