Here’s a Zen story for you that Dickey would endorse. I once heard Joseph Campbell tell it in a seminar in New York:

The master of a Zen monastery sensed his death approaching and called his young monks together to begint he process of choosing his successor. When all the monks were seated before him, the master placed a ceramic pot on the floor between himself and, saying nothing, sat back down on the floor before them and meditated. The other monks sat silently. After some hours had passed, one of the monks arose, picked up the pot and smashed it to the floor. The old master designated him as his successor.
