The anti-Franklin? Rick Ankiel thanks the fans of St. Louis

Ankiel Ad

Ryan Franklin may be on the outs with the fans of St. Louis, but a former Cardinal — Rick Ankiel — is in warm fuzzy land.

In town as an opposing player for the first time, Ankiel took out a full-page ad in the sports section of the Post-Dispatch on Tuesday, thanking Cardinals fans for their support over the years.

And given Ankiel’s tumultuous career path, he needed the support. He got it and it seems he’s grateful for it.

(thanks to Paperlions for the heads up)

I remember Eric Karros doing the same thing with the Cubs after 2003. I always appreciated that and respected how much he cared.

    Well done, Rick.

Words cannot express how painful it was to watch his downfall. 10k per 9 innings as a 20 year old rookie to falling apart in the post season and throwing every other pitch 10 feet over the catcher’s head. The fact that he was able to come back as an outfielder, and occasionally even a pretty good one (sadly, not lately) was one of the most amazing baseball feats I’ve ever seen.

Thanks, and we wish you nothing but the best. Only the outfield walls are glad you are gone.

Seeing him that homer in his first game back after his recall as an oufielder is one of the best memories I have as Cards fan.

Very classy move with the ad, well done Rick.
