Maicer Izturis rips “ignorant people” for questioning durability, then sits out game with injury

Last week Maicer Izturis called the fans who question his durability “ignorant people” who “don’t know the game.”

I suggested at the time that it probably wasn’t a great idea, since a) he played only 254 of 486 games the previous three seasons, and b) fans tend not to see a comment like that and think “you know, he’s right, let’s give him a break.”

And the whole thing looks especially silly now because Izturis was scratched from yesterday’s lineup with hamstring soreness.

Obviously a player sitting out a game with a minor injury isn’t usually noteworthy, but a player doing so a couple days after ripping his own team’s fans for questioning all the previous times he sat out more than one game with other injuries … well, that’s a slightly different story. To us ignorant people, it does seem like funny timing.

Actually, if you read the first article, Izzy is saying that he plays the game 100%, not that he’ll only play when he’s 100%. If you look at the second quote, where he references Josh Hamilton, he mentions that he “plays hard.”

Throughout the years he’s been on the DL multiple times, so I think he has earned the “fragile” tag. Sosh knows this, hence the reason why he was scratched. He’s way too valuable to the Angels’ lineup to be out an extended period of time. (Especially with the way they’re going now.)

I think many Halo fans will tell you that it’d be nice to not worry about Izzy getting injured, but they can understand why he won’t hold back in fear of getting hurt. I’m certainly not offended that he bristles at the “fragile” tag. I think its good that he knows his weakness and is angry about it – it shows he cares. Nothing that I know about Izzy would lead me to believe that he’s “ripping” fans.

Sounds like he should be saying, “Don’t let this latest injury undermine my argument.”
