I have two sons. They are amazing young men. I am certain that beating them would not have produced such fine young men. I am certain that berating them would not have produced such fine young men. “A stern loud voice will scare a child into submission.” This is seriously your “better” approach to raising a child? To dealing with a 5yo little girl? Loud? Scare? Submission???

Lemme tell you something, Solutions Boy. Use a calm, soft, patient voice, and guide the child to proper behavior. Because there are two certainties in raising a child:

“If you hit your child, sooner or later you will not be able to hit hard enough.”
“If you yell at your child, sooner or later you will not be able to yell loud enough.”

When that happens, just exactly how will you stand any chance of your child ever heeding anything you say again? And yeah…that happens at just about the time they’ll need your guidance more than ever.

Loud…scare…submission. My God.

Exactly. Watching this guy play on the verge of snapping for two years, it was clear that he was capable of violence and worse. Everett was really talented, even electrifying when his head was screwed on straight, but anything from a bad breakfast to a bad strike call could turn him into Mr. Hyde. I’ll never forget the look on Bret Saberhagen’s face during one of Carl’s on-field meltdowns—it said, “How did I come to be playing with a guy like this?”

The 5-year-old daughter of Mets outfielder Carl Everett who was placed in foster care last week when officials found bruises on her face, does not want to return to her family, a lawyer for the city’s child welfare agency said in court yesterday.

Shawna was placed in foster care last Thursday after child care workers in the Mets’ family room at Shea Stadium noticed bruises on her forehead, left cheek and right ear. She and Carl, who is Linda Everett’s biological son, were taken to Long Island Jewish Medical Center where a social worker reported to child welfare workers that ”the father slapped Shawna excessively hard on the face.”
