For people interested in this kind of thing, reading "56" by Kostya Kennedy is a must. Rather than engage in idol worship or a smashjob, the book focuses on 1941, where Joe D. was at the time in his professional career, the scenario of the time immediately preceeding WWII, and at the end gives a well-researched thesis from many mathematicians on the probability of it happening again (if ever).
As uyf pointed out yesterday, Joe also had a 61 game streak 8 years earlier in the PCL.
Finally, it gives a hint on how baseball has evolved and the reasons it may never be duplicated (and the occurances that made it possible to happen at all).
