Nah. This is seriously fucked up. Daniel Sickels was a politician and bad U.S. Civil War general who lost a leg and the Third Corps at Gettysburg:

"[Sickels] preserved the bones from his leg and donated them to the Army Medical Museum in a small coffin-shaped box, along with a visiting card marked, "With the compliments of Major General D.E.S." For several years thereafter, he reportedly visited the limb on the anniversary of the amputation."

Thinking more on the subject, Bates will probably continue keeping his rib in his back pocket until and if reaches AA and pitchers bat on occasion. Otherwise, this could lead to either some inappropriate Tim Raines-type headfirst slides or a nasty butt wound.

spudchucker... good to hear from you! Good to see that at least someone here "gets" my (admittedly offbeat), sense of humor too!

I was offline for a few days because my Dell flat panel monitor crapped out and it took me some time to get my head around what the best deal out there was and what features I should set as a prerequisite, but I finally decided to go with a 23" Hanns-G HD monitor, and it was a very good choice as it's awesome!

For anyone out there who has to make a similar decision, here's some additional input for you. I contacted a top monitor repair service here in Southern California and spoke with one of their head technicians before making a final decision. Here are some good tips he gave me:

* Don't buy off-brand, regardless of the specs, because you'll likely find yourself having to buy another monitor in 6-18 months;
* Don't bother with an extended warranty, because they typically don't cover the actual screen itself, which is what fails most of the time.
* Any monitor that's not HD is obsolete. You may not need an HD monitor right now, but you'll regret not having purchased one later.

Vincent-tampon, I'm sure that you're not a doctor. I seriously doubt that given the enormous amount of medical resources at Hughes disposal that his condition is any more life threatening than a burst appendix would be. Any surgery is life threatening, but so is getting behind the wheel of a car too. You know, approximately 50,000 Americans die in car accidents every year; does that mean that I should only get around by bus? Give me a break!

Vincent-tampon, I’m sure that you’re not a doctor.

No hate at all towards anyone other than goofball Nick Swisher when it comes to the Yankees, but an awful lot of self professed Yankee fans could gag a maggot with their pomposity.

Oh, and Vincent if I'm a "douchebag", that would make you a used tampon, because you were the first one in!

The removal of a rib? Hmm, this reminds me of something......

Adam was walking around the Garden of Eden feeling very lonely, so God asked Adam, "What is wrong with you?"

Adam said, "Lord, I don't have anyone to talk to."

God said, "Then I will give you a companion, and she will be called a 'woman'. This person will cook for you and wash your clothes, she will always agree with every decision you make. She will bear your children and never ask you to get up in the middle of the night to take care of them. She will not nag you, and will always be the first to admit she was wrong when you've had a disagreement. She will never have a headache, and will freely give 'love' and compassion whenever needed. She will never question your behaviour or the company you keep. She will support you and understand that you have important decisions to make throughout your life and don't have time for nonsense..."

Adam asked God, "What will this woman cost?"

God said, "An arm and a leg..."

Adam said, "What can I get for just a rib?"

Here's to hoping Hughes gets better soon, the guy was on his way to where he wanted to be. What a shame.

There is an impressive amount of hate in every single on of your comments. You seem to have a personal vendetta against the Yankee's organization and all of it's fans. It's remarkable that there are people out there like you that can take something like a career ending condition and throw it in somebody's face for simply being a fan and/or having respect for a ball player. Get over your daddy issues and keep it in your pants-- nobody wants to deal with a douchebag with your kind of attitude.
