Players think Shin-Soo Choo is baseball’s most underrated

Being underrated is a tricky business. The more underrated you become, the more people note how underrated you are, and thus the more people try to emphatically make your case for being better than people think and thus the quicker it is that you become overrated.  Ask Ben Wallace how this works. Or the city of Portland, Oregon.

Or ask Shin-Soo Choo who, according to a poll of major leaguers conducted by Sports Illustrated, is the most underrated in all of baseball:

Most selected was Shin-Soo Choo (13%), followed by the Atlanta Braves’ Martin Prado (5%), the Texas Rangers’ DH Michael Young (4%), the Boston Red Sox’s 1B Adrian Gonzalez (4%) and the Washington Nationals’ 3B Ryan Zimmerman (3%).

Choo is a Boras client, of course, so expect to see this poll show up in his little prospectus when he hits free agency.  I’m not sure how one goes about overselling underratedness, but I’m sure Boras will figure it out.

UPDATE:  Well, this is bad timing.

Hmmmm…given Young’s low BB% and poor fielding numbers across the diamond, plus playing in a favorable offensive run environment in Arlington, I’d think him a more appropriate nominee for most overrated player. And I would classify Gonzalez as just “rated”.

Choo isn’t a bad choice, but I think Zimmerman might be better. Over the last three years, he’s posted the 7th highest fWAR, behind the usual suspects of Pujols, Utley, Longoria, Ramirez, Mauer, and Holliday.

I want to rephrase that Choo is a VERY GOOD choice, before that gets disputed. Easily one of teh top 3 that comes to mind.

Off the top of my skull he’d be my #1 choice in that dept as well.

    Michael Young?!

Garret Anderson is the classic “Underrated to the point of being overrated” baseball player.

Michael Young has totally assumed his mantle.

Choo single-handedly won the Asian games to keep his ass out of the Korean military. Definitely the most underrated here and probably rated just about right in Korea.

Apparently he just got a DUI. Good timing, Choo!

He is nothing more then a good player on a bad team, actually making him just a average player.Which i think he is just average anyways not good and im a Tribe fan

OK, you convinced that Choo really is underrated, if a Tribe fan thinks he is merely average.

Check out this website. One popular (among the statheads crowd anyway) website believes his performance with worth over $20,000,000 for both 2009 and 2010 if he had been a free agent:
http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=3174&position=OF#value Other advanced metrics end up similarly concluding he has been far above average.

No pitchers? There’s a certain inherent perspective bias in this, obviously. Josh Johnson is far more underrated than Zim or Choo, IMO.
