Who knows how much the batting coach contributes to the sucess of any team. I see more value in the pitching coach and bullpen coach, but the Giants are awesome in those categories...props to Righetti and Gardner. But all the Giants did last year was win it all with a new batting coach. Not saying he was the reason for the Giants success. But it is funny you make that comment considering what the Giants accomplished last year. Yes, we probably had the lowest hitting average of any wiinning WS team (just a guess), but we still hit when it counted.

I guess that's why if you look up the team with the most HRs on any particular year, I bet they didn't always win the WS that year! You have to play both sides of the ball and the Giants were more balanced when it counted.

I'm sure in Curacao, Meulens is something of a national treasure, despite a lack of success in MLB. Curacao is a pretty small place, though. But as an ambassador to space, they couldn't have picked a better person. He does speak five languages. Maybe by the time he returns to Earth, he'll speak Vulcan and Klingon.

As probably the world's only serious collector of Hensley Meulens cards, I can attest to the surprising number of sets he found his way into. So far, I've got 119 of the total 122 cards of Meulens that I've managed to identify. Those cards span four countries (US, Canada, Dominican Republic & Japan).

Check 'em out:

How many different "future star" Bam Bam Meulens cards did you guys collect in the late 80s? I have roughly 30. Every card company seemed to put one out with the future star/elite prospect/whatever else label every year for half a decade. I wonder who the first guy who finally took a stand and demanding that they stop was? Was he cheered, booed, or did he just make everyone really sad?

I'm still shocked that someone hired Hensley Muelens to be their hitting coach. The great "Bam Bam" who hit exactly 15 career HRs over 7 seasons. What a waste.
